Shoulder pain while common is not normal. There is a saying in human physiology that sates; “Stability is sacrificed for mobility”. The shoulder joint is the most mobile joint in the body and subsequently the most unstable.
Shoulder pain is always a result of three causes. Pathology, i.e. a cyst pressing on a nerve. Acute trauma. Or the most frequent cause the repetitive injury cycle. (The result of dong the same thing over and over again). Many believe that many acute shoulder injuries are actually a result of the repetitive injury cycle. Why? Because the repetitive injury syndrome causes a build up of scar tissue. ( Think “Carpal Tunnel Syndrome”, a build up of scar tissue that entraps the median nerve in the wrist). These adhesions change the way muscles contract and elongate which ultimately effects the bio mechanics of the shoulder joint. Predisposing you to injury.
Our modern day lifestyle dramatically predisposes us to these repetitive injuries. We spend most of our lives on computers, smart phones, working with our shoulders in an internally rotated position.
Research conducted by NASA has shown that any muscle put into a contracted shortened positioned for more than 10 to 20 minutes causes that muscle to stay in that contracted position.
This is also true for such conditions as back pain, neck pain, knee pain and headaches!
Athletes and remember were all athletes, were all using our bodies either as occupational athletes or professional athletes and we all face these factors.
So, how do professional athletes manage these issues?
